To honour International Women’s Day, we are spotlighting someone from our mist that has made an impact in both the cap collecting community and the world of dance. Meet Claire Hough, a member of the New Era Carnaby Store team and professional dancer from East London.

Beginning at just 10 years old Claire reflects on how she came to find her love of headwear – “I got my first fitted, probably when I was about ten years old. “My sister got it for me, and it was a New England Patriots cap.”

“My collection started with mostly fitted caps, I remember I had the classic grey and white MLB basic LA Dodgers cap - but then I skipped to curved visor (9FORTY to Truckers) but now, we’re back on the Fitteds”

For Claire, working at New Era speaks to the full circle nature of her journey, what was once just a brand and a hobby has now become her home and a lifestyle. “New Era means memories to me, it’s definitely sentimental. Being a dancer, I might look at a cap and be like, I wore this at this performance or I wore this on this shoot, or I remember buying this for this outfit to wear at this event.”

“The undervisor adds a detail in a collector’s world, green and grey undervisors are popping. If you have one of those it’s an exclusive cap. If you’re taller than me, I just move my head and then it’s like “Bow! There’s some colour” which I really like so I do look for the undervisor element.”

As a performer who’s used to being in the spotlight, caps became a main source of style and self-expression for Claire, a means to stand out from the crowd and express her individuality, and this consideration for style goes into every cap choice. “The undervisor adds a detail in a collector’s world, green and grey undervisors are popping. If you have one of those it’s an exclusive cap. If you’re taller than me, I just move my head and then it’s like “Bow! There’s some colour” which I really like so I do look for the undervisor element.”

Growing up as a female who’s into Krump dancing with an appreciation for caps, Claire is no stranger to operating in spaces which are seen as predominantly male. It has instilled a greater will and confidence in her which she uses today to empower and encourage other women on a similar path, “Being a Krump dancer, which is another male dominated field, only makes me want to show up for the other women out there.”

“In Krump, we have our own section of that dance that is literally just based around that dance called hat tricks, so you might go to a Krump event and there’s a category on hat tricks and whoever’s got the best hat trick wins. It’s a big deal and for me, if I’m going to any place or if I’m judging or even if I’m dancing, I’ll have my dance caps that are comfortable and that I know I feel good dancing in.”
